Our Honey Refractometer gives beekeepers a quick, accurate way to measure the moisture content of honey before extraction and bottling. With a measurement range of 12% to 27% moisture, it takes the guesswork out of determining whether your honey is ready or still needs more time in the hive.

Honey begins as nectar with a very high water content. As the bees process it, they evaporate much of that moisture until it becomes the thick, shelf-stable honey we know. If honey is harvested while the moisture content is still too high, naturally occurring yeasts can begin fermenting it during storage.

That’s why a refractometer is one of the most useful tools to have when harvesting honey.

Simply place a small sample of honey onto the refractometer prism, look through the eyepiece, and read the moisture level. Light refraction allows you to quickly determine the percentage of water remaining in your honey.

Why Every Beekeeper Should Measure Honey Moisture

Capped comb is a great indicator that honey is approaching maturity, but cappings alone don’t tell you the exact moisture percentage.

For most finished honey, beekeepers commonly aim for approximately 17–18% moisture. As moisture increases, so does the risk of fermentation, which is why actually testing your honey becomes especially valuable when harvesting partially capped frames or during humid conditions.

Calibration & Care

For the most reliable readings, your honey refractometer should be properly calibrated using refractometer calibration fluid and kept clean between samples.

After testing, gently clean the prism according to the product instructions and avoid leaving honey residue on the refractometer between uses.
